WILLIAM WOODHOUSE ~ Awaiting His Master

One of the finest English sporting painters, William Woodhouse was born on the 1st of October 1857 at Poulton-le Sands, England.  He received his formal art training at the Lancaster School of Art.  After having completed his studies, he exhibited widely in London, including the Royal Academy between 1889 and 1896, and also at the Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Scottish Academy, Manchester City Art Gallery, Birmingham City Art Gallery, etc.

Along with his sporting paintings, Woodhouse also painted birds, animals and landscapes.  He is best known for his gun dog portraits.  In 1927, the Harris Museum and Art Gallery in Preston held an exhibition of over 70 works by Woodhouse and in 1939 held a memorial exhibition of 89 paintings, including many watercolours, a medium in which Woodhouse was extremely accomplished.

Awaiting His Master is a wonderful example of Woodhouse’s work, original and attentive to detail, capturing the integrity of the hunting dog to true perfection.  It is presented in excellent condition in its original period frame and is signed by the artist.
