Noted for his extraordinarily strong paintings, Pierre Ambrogiani was avant-garde both in his thinking and the paintings which he painted. He was born in Ajaccio, Corsica on the 17th January 1907. His family moved to Marseille, France in 1908. He received his formal art training at the l’Ecole des Beaux Arts and on completion of his studies embarked on a career as a designer, but his passion to paint was such that in 1937 he ceased this career and devoted the rest of his life to painting. He travelled to Paris to paint the scenes of cabaret, the nightlife of Montmarte and then to Provence where he painted some of his most important work. Portraits evolved but it was for his landscapes and flowers studies that connoisseurs and collectors were most impressed with.

Ambrogiani was renowned for his palette of bright, warm tones and thick, passionate brush strokes. The sun and colours of Provence were a constant theme throughout his work. On viewing this exceptional example of his work, one can see how Ambrogiani captures the viewer’s attention with startling composition and bold colour. Interestingly enough as with Duchamp and Picabia, his automaton had a particular personality. Its sinister symbolism was intended to pose a threat to the established order. It was therefore considered by the painter to provide a blueprint for his later characterisation of contemporary avant-garde literati.

Ambrogiani participated in his first major exhibition with a group of fellow Provencal artists in 1936 in Marseille: numerous exhibitions followed, including one in Paris in 1946 and another in New York in 1947. In 1973 Pierre Ambrogiani had a major retrospective exhibition at the Musee de la Vilee Charite in Marseille and died after a long illness in 1985. He received the Prix International de la Biennale de Menton in 1951, the Grand Prix des Peintres Temoins de leur Temps in 1967, and the Prix du Gemail in 1968.

Examples of his work may be seen in various museums including: Musee des Longchamps, Marseille and Roussillon.
