EDWARD ALGERNON STUART DOUGLAS ~ Four English Hunt Scenes ~ Sold

Much admired for his wonderful sporting paintings, Edward Algernon Stuart Douglas was a British painter in both oil and watercolour but it is for his oil paintings that he is best known. Douglas worked in conjunction with Ackermanns for many years, who in 1887 published a set of four coursing scenes by Douglas which were engraved by C.R. Stock. Through the passage of time, many biographical details have been lost with regard to the life of this very competent sporting artist. Between 1880 and 1892 he exhibited ten works at the Royal Academy, all of which were hunting scenes and which were sent from an address in Barnes, London. Douglas frequently produced pictures in pairs or sets of four; a pair of his hunting scenes was engraved by Edward Gilbert Hester. He sometimes worked in miniature and his larger compositions have the detailed and delicate finish of his miniature work. He also painted portraits of horses, dogs and group portraits, such as ‘Lord Portman’s Hounds; The East Dorset’ which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1890. Titles by the artist include ‘After a Long Run’ 1883, ‘The Huntsman’s Favourites’ 1884, ‘Lord Portman’s Hounds’ 1890. His passion for painting sporting images has rendered us with some of the liveliest depictions of the English hunting field. His hunting scenes evoke all the charm of a past era. His work is superb in quality and as can be seen from these beautiful paintings, his horses and hounds are painted with great accuracy and sensitivity. His work shows a special sensitivity to the hunt and its natural surroundings, original and delightful, yet strong and well finished. Avidly sought after, hunting scenes dating from the Victorian period have become very scarce.
